Dream Come True
In October 2020, after a year dominated by Covid-19, we closed on a 12.3-acre parcel of land near Blue Ridge, Texas. I'm not entirely sure when my desire to own a piece of land was born, but I'm pretty sure it's been with me for most of my life. I married my high school sweetheart five years after we graduated high school. He grew up a city boy, albeit one with some country relatives. I grew up in a small town with a family garden, and farming ancestors. I always assumed my dream of farm life was not part of our future and I was OK with that. After moving many times and experiencing several new homes in good school districts, we moved to North Texas as empty nesters. We settled into a historic home and began planting roots with the intent of making it our final residence.
I don't know what made me start looking at listings of land. It was an exercise I had gone through other times that were somewhat entertaining but resulted in nothing. This time was different. I found a great property that would have been a stretch financially...but it was perfect. I pulled up the listing on an app every day or two; until one day it wasn't there. I was heartbroken. A few days later I looked again for any new listings in the area. I was a surprised when I found a listing for a smaller property very near the one I had fallen in love with! The posted pictures looked very much like those of the property we lost out on. I didn't quite understand the connection between the two properties at the time, but this time I wasted no time reaching out to a realtor to see the property!
The new listing was the same property I had fallen in love with, but had been split, which made it more affordable. The 12.3 acres for sale were the portion with the romantic drive that dipped down to cross the seasonal creek under the green tunnel created by the trees growing by the water. I had a hard time hiding my enthusiasm while walking the property with the realtor. Within a few days, the land was ours! It was a whirlwind week. I found out when our realtor called with the good news that at first she had been told by the listing agent that we didn't get the property. She couldn't bear to give us the news and chose to not call us with the news for a little bit. The listing agent had been a little scattered and distracted with another property at the time, and sure enough, she had confused the properties and we in fact had the accepted offer for the land!
It still seems hard to believe that we are owners of such a beautiful piece of property. I pinch myself a little every time I step foot on the land we now own and will one day be our home.
